While the Danes as the name of a people and the designation king of the Danes are known centuries before, the name 'Danmark' first appears in the foreign sources in the 800s, and on Danish soil it is first mentioned around 965 on the rune stone of King Harald Blåtand in Jelling.
There were no sharp boundaries in the Viking Age as there are today, and what Denmark actually included in the 8th century is not known exactly. On the rune stone in Jelling, Harald calls himself king of both Denmark and Norway, but parts of southern Sweden probably also belonged to the Danish kingdom. At the end of the Viking Age, Denmark, Norway, England and some of Sweden had a common king.
That's how big Denmark was during the Viking Age.
