The mystery of Ragnarok – the apocalypse in Norse mythology

WHAT IS RAGNAROK?

The word "Ragnarok" comes from the Old Norse language, meaning "Destiny of the Gods".

During that endless cold winter, humanity will gradually exhaust all its sources of life. All laws and ethics will fall. All that remains is the naked struggle for survival.

The sun and moon will disappear, to be more precise, be swallowed up. You know, two giant wolves Skoll and Hati are chasing the sun and the moon every day. When Ragnarok arrives, they will capture and devour the sun and moon. The stars will also disappear, leaving only a black void in the sky.

The world tree Yggdrasil, the great tree supporting the 9 worlds, will tremble. All worlds shake. The mountains will collapse to the ground.

The giant wolf Fenrir, son of Loki, was chained by the Asgardians to prevent it from destroying the worlds. On the day of Ragnarok, the chains that bind the giant wolf Fenrir will break. This beast will run to ravage worlds, devouring everything in its path.

Jormungand, the giant serpent on the bottom of the ocean that surrounds the world, will rise. It will cause water from the ocean to flood the ground. Jormungand will spray his venom across the world, poisoning the land, water, and air.

BATTLE OF THE GODS

The dome of the sky will be split open, and from the crack will appear fire giants from the flaming world of Muspelheim. These giants of fire will attack Asgard - the world of the supreme Aesir gods. Odin - king of the gods - will decide the final battle begins.

In fact, the king of the gods Odin had been preparing for this day of Ragnarok a long time ago. The most powerful warriors of mankind, after being sacrificed, were taken by the Valkyrie goddesses to Odin's Valhalla temple. They gathered here to prepare for this final battle.

Odin will fight Fenrir. Unfortunately, Fenrir will devour Odin. Vidar - Odin's son god - will destroy Fenrir to avenge his father.

Garm, the wolf guarding the gates of Hell of the goddess Hel, will battle Tyr, the patron god of warriors and heroes.

Heimdall - the god of the gates of Asgard - will kill Loki - the traitor of the gods.

Freyr - the god of abundance, the ruler of the spirit world Alfheim, will be the opponent of the giant Surt - the leader of the fire giants.

The mighty god Thor will fight the giant snake Jormungandr. Thor will succeed in knocking down the great snake with his hammer blows. But then, Thor will die from the venom of the snake Jormungandr.

At the end of the war of the gods, what is left of the world will sink into the sea. The whole world will be nothing but empty. The whole universe is destroyed!

A NEW WORLD

Some say that Ragnarok is the custom baseball jersey end of the story – and of all stories. It is the end of the universe.

But, others say, Ragnarok is just the end of an old world. After Ragnarok, a new world, greener and more beautiful, will emerge from the water.

Some of the gods that will survive the fall of the old world will rule in the new world.

One man and one woman, Lif and Lifthrasir, survived the apocalypse. They will populate the new lush land and will create a new generation of people.
