Goddess IDUNN AND YOUNG Apples
Idunn is the daughter of the dwarf Ivald, wife of the god Bragi. She is the goddess who guards the apples of youth and represents eternal youth. Idunn's apples keep the gods of Asgard forever young.
Once, Idunn was abducted
from Asgard by a giant, her apple trees no tatkuink clothing longer bearing fruit and so the gods had nothing to keep them alive, they quickly became sick and old, With a little bit of power, they forced Loki to rescue the Idunn and bring her back, so they knew how important she was.
The story is as follows:
Odinn, Loki and Vili are on their way to travel. They were so hungry that as soon as they saw a cow, they decided to eat it. But for some reason the beef wasn't cooked. While the gods were trying to figure out the reason for this mockery, a huge eagle perched on a nearby oak tree told the gods that it knew why the beef wasn't cooked, and that it would show They know how to cook the meat if they're willing to let it fill up first. As soon as they agreed, the eagle swooped down and ate both thighs of the bull to the point of angering Loki, who took out a stick and stabbed the eagle. The eagle flew forward with the staff and Loki at the other end of the stick. He told Loki that he would only let him down if he agreed to kidnap the goddess Idunn and her immortal apples. When the gods returned to Asgard, Loki did as he promised, luring the goddess Idunn out of Asgard to the forest, where the eagle awaited, to see apples that were golden and more beautiful than hers. The eagle, none other than the giant Thiassi in eagle's form, had taken Idunn to his house called Þrymheimr in the mountains of Jotunheimr.
The gods quickly grew old
after their source of immortality was stolen, so they decided Loki had to find the goddess Idunn. After all, it was Loki who caused all the trouble. Loki took the guise of Freyja and flew to Þrymheimr, where he found Idunn alone. The god turned Idunn into a nut and took it with his claws and flew back to Asgard at the viking apparel fastest speed possible. As soon as Thiassi returned from the boat and discovered that Idunn was gone, he put on the body of an eagle and flew towards Asgard. His wings beat so fast and so strong that they caused strong winds that impeded Loki's journey. When the gods saw the eagle chasing Loki, as soon as Loki was safe in Asgard, they created a fire that burned Thiassi's wings. When the eagle fell to the ground, the gods killed it. Later, his daughter Skadi came to take revenge.
It is debated whether
Idunn's apples were later added to the myths due to the influence of Greek and Irish legends. In one of the early versions of the Haustlong story composed by the poet Þjóðólfr of Hvinir, Idunn's absence aged the gods but made no mention of apples. In the Prose Edda, Snorri claims that Idunn kept the apples to make the gods immortal, but that is probably not true, since the giants don't need them. Perhaps these apples play a different role. Frigg gave an apple to a king in the Volsunga Saga when he begged for a son. Perhaps those apples were not for the gods, but for the humans.
